The following section outlines the standard training we deliver to all staff from the point of employment. There are, in addition, a range of additional courses delivered on specific topics such as ‘drug awareness’ and ‘dealing with autism’; these are arranged on a needs basis when we identify particular requirements in the knowledge of staff teams.
The Induction and Foundation standards are being amalgamated into a ‘common foundation’ standard for 2007 and so all new staff in 2007 will undertake this combined standard.

PRICE Training
PRICE is a training course delivered in-house by our qualified PRICE instructors. PRICE stands for Protecting Rights in a Care Environment, and is delivered to meet the Bild Code of Practice.
This is a four day training programme which once passed, certifies for a year. Everyone is required to attend refresher courses annually. This course teaches staff how to deal with incidents using permissible forms of control and more importantly, how to prevent incidents happening and how to defuse situations before they develop.
Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene
The Foundation certificate in Food Hygiene is a training programme that is certified by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. With health and hygiene being highly important, this course will teach the safe handling, preparation, production and storage of food.
First Aid
Rather than having a small number of first-aiders, we train all of our staff to ‘Appointed Persons’ standard certified by St John Ambulance.
Health and Safety Induction
As part of our ongoing commitment to Health and Safety all staff are required to complete the in house Health and Safety training course. This is completed after Induction Standards, Basic Food Hygiene and First Aid courses have been passed.
Child Protection Training
As with the Induction and Foundation Standards, this is another training requirement of the National Minimum Standards and is an essential resource for all individuals working with vulnerable children. Knowledge and understanding on the subject of child protection must meet the requirements as stated in National Minimum Standard 17.
Counselling Skills
This course is another in house course, it aims to deliver:
An understanding of what counselling is.
An understanding of Southern Adolescent Care Services therapeutic approach. (Range/variety of approaches in other children’s’ homes).
An understanding of the theory of humanistic (person-centred) counselling.
An understanding of the techniques used in humanistic counselling and how to employ them in your day-to-day child care work.
The three categories of counselling covered are:
Psychodynamic Counselling (origins in the work of Freud, Jung, Winnicot …)
Behaviourism - Affect (emotion), Behaviour, Cognition (thought) (ABC)
Humanism - Person-Centred Counselling (origins in the work of Carl Rogers, Alan Ivey, Abraham Maslow …)
Beyond Foundation
NVQ III
Once you have passed your Induction and Foundation standards, the next step is NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (Children and young people).
On enrolment staff are allocated an internal NVQ Assessor. Southern Adolescent Care Services will provide the materials needed along with access to computers – whether in the home or the training room at the office. A regular NVQ study session will be arranged between yourself and your Assessor to help plan work, provide feedback and support. The NVQ is a two year programme although some people have completed it sooner.
Beyond NVQ III
As Southern Adolescent Care Services firmly believes in the training and development of their staff, we ensure that their training is ongoing and does not stop once they have become NVQ III qualified. Once achieved, their progress is determined by appraisal targets. These targets are agreed in annual appraisal interviews and are written into a Professional Development Plan. This plan is then monitored and updated regularly via supervision sessions and annually via appraisals.
Training beyond NVQ III could include:
Counselling
Psychotherapy
Behaviour Management
NVQ IV
Registered Managers Award
Substance Abuse Specialism |
